Ottawa – The Ottawa 2017 Bureau and Mayor Jim Watson, in collaboration with lead partner CIBC, are happy to announce that more than 75 countries and international partners will participate in Ottawa Welcomes the World, as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations in the nation’s capital.

From March to December 2017, embassies, high commissions and international partners will highlight their culture with a series of world-class events at Lansdowne Park.

“In 2017, Canadians will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation, and every community is invited to take part in the festivities, said the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage. “Through the ‘Ottawa Welcomes the World’ program, foreign embassies and international partners will host a number of activities that showcase the many facets of Canada’s diversity and the tremendous contributions of its citizens.”

“As home to the nation’s capital and a founding province, Ontario is excited to host events celebrating cultures from around the world as part of our 150th anniversary,” said the Honourable Eleanor McMahon, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. “Ottawa Welcomes the World echoes the rich diversity and spirit of inclusion that make our province great. Our government is proud to support Ottawa in encouraging cultural expression and creating jobs and economic opportunities in celebration of this significant milestone ahead.”

“As the capital of Canada and host of so many foreign embassies and high commissions, our city has the unique opportunity to engage the international community in Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “Ottawa Welcomes the World is a wonderful way for residents and visitors to discover and connect with our rich multicultural heritage.”

The historic Horticulture Building and Aberdeen Pavilion will be the setting for international showcases that highlight trade, tourism, education, food, music, dance and more. The exhibit will be on display from May 1 to June 4 at Ottawa City Hall (OAG Annex).

In September, the Ottawa 2017 Bureau and Ottawa’s four school boards announced that they will work together to have students visit the Ottawa Welcomes the World showcase at Lansdowne Park. Ottawa 2017 will provide students with a colourful passport where they can mark their booklet with the emblems and currencies of the countries that they visit.

“Canadian culture is vibrant and diverse and we look forward to bringing it to life as we mark 150 proud years as a nation,” said Monique Giroux, Vice-President, Sponsorship Marketing & Strategic Partnerships, CIBC. “Via this unique window on the world, we will celebrate our unity and diversity with all Canadians, as we bring cultures and traditions from around the globe to Ottawa.”

“We are thrilled with the amazing response to Ottawa Welcomes the World from the capital’s embassies and high commissions, and are happy that so many have stepped forward to partner with us in the 2017 celebrations,” said Guy Laflamme, Executive Director of the Ottawa 2017 Bureau. “In addition to engaging the international community, this program is a way of celebrating Canadian diversity and the multicultural diaspora in our nation’s capital.”

Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations will offer Canadians and visitors from around the world an exceptional and memorable year of high-caliber experiences while bringing a record number of visitors to Ottawa in 2017 to mark this important milestone for our country.

Ottawa 2017 thanks its lead partner CIBC, premier partner Bell, the Government of Ontario (www.ontario.ca/150 #ontario150) and the Government of Canada (www.canada.ca/150 #canada150) for their contributions in helping to deliver twelve full months of bold events, immersive experiences and all-out celebrations.
