Ottawa 2017

Mayor's Message

As Canada’s Capital, we are used to playing host to national and international events. However, 2017 will be a once in a generation occasion, as we prepare to host the world for Canada’s 150th birthday.

We anticipate up to 1.75 million more guests to join us for this occasion – a 20% increase over normal years. Our ambitious program is expected to add over $230 million to the local economy as a result.

We are currently finishing work to secure our sponsorship and creative partners, but as the big year approaches, you can expect announcements of major events and initiatives. Residents and guests alike will enjoy a unique lineup of programming that has never been seen in Ottawa, or even Canada. If you think you know what to expect in our city, Ottawa 2017 will challenge you to think again.

But there are more ways to celebrate than throwing a party, even if it is a year-long, city-wide extravaganza:

  • We will celebrate our natural environment by planting one million trees, including special Canada 150 Groves of Maple in each ward.
  • We will celebrate our health by planting new community gardens and expanding our cycling and recreation infrastructure.
  • We will celebrate our ingenuity with new programs for entrepreneurs at the Bayview Innovation Centre.
  • We will celebrate our arts and culture with the opening of the new Ottawa Art Gallery and the redeveloped Arts Court.

We are doing these things because Ottawa 2017 isn’t a celebration of our past. It is a celebration of our future. It will leave an enduring legacy – one of excitement, opportunity and prosperity.

Be Here for Canada’s Big Year.
